What is vishing and how can you protect yourself?

GeneralEdward Kiledjian

A fraudulent practice known as Vishing involves the impersonation of a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication to gain sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details, or Social Security numbers.

Vishing is a combination of "voice" and "phishing." Phishing is a type of cyber attack that uses fraudulent emails or websites to trick victims into divulging personal information.

Most phishing attacks take place over the telephone and are often accompanied by a threat or sense of urgency to encourage victims to divulge their personal information. In some cases, the attackers may pose as representatives from legitimate organizations, such as banks or government agencies, and claim that the victim's account has been compromised or that they need to verify their identity.

A vishing scam can be very difficult to distinguish from an organization's legitimate email or phone call. To trick victims, attackers often create fake websites that resemble the real thing or spoof caller ID information.

To protect yourself from vishing attacks, you should be aware of the threat and exercise caution when giving out personal information, especially over the phone or via email. If you receive a suspicious phone call or email, do not respond and instead contact the organization directly using a verified phone number or website address. Additionally, you should install and update security software on your computer to help protect you against malware-based attacks (firewalls and reputable antivirus programs).

You should immediately notify the authorities and your financial institution if you believe you have been the victim of a vishing attack.
