I have written a lot about Roam Mobility and love the fact I can freely use my smartphone without having to pay huge fees to my canadian carrier.

Roam Mobility just announced that it will have access to the T-Mobile US LTE network as of July 7 2014. T-Mobiles new LTE network cover over most major US metropolitan area and will greatly increase your connectivity speed when in the US.

If you have a Roam Mobility SIM card, you will automatically get registered for the new faster network and be notified via email.

Our 4G LTE Network doesn’t just bring faster data speeds. It’s the first of many new services we’ll be announcing in the coming weeks that we expect to have a big impact on Canadian roaming services.
— Emir Aboulhosn, CEO of Roam Mobility.

I know Roam Mobility has much bigger ambitions than just US roaming services and I expect them to launch some type of global roaming service in the next 12-24 months. Time will tell but it's great to see a canadian company innovating.

As a casual traveller to the US, I am always looking for ways to stay connected affordably and Roam Mobility has been my consistent go to provider. They offer a mix of plans to suit everyone and the pricing is extremely competitive.

The only complaint I would hear was around buying one of their special roaming sim cards. Now you can pickup their products at any one of the 265 Futureshop or Bestbuy locations across Canada ( Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland).

If you're a Canadian travelling to the US on vacation or for work, I strongly recommend you check out their products and services.

Now that the Canadian wireless auction for the 700 MHZ band is over, we can list the winners and losers.

The first big winner is the Canadian government making a cool 5.27B$.

The biggest surprise was Videotron by winning licenses in Ontario, Alberta and BC. Which clearly means they have expansion plans like I wrote about here (link).

The biggest spender was Rogers with 3.3B$ next was Telus spending 1.1B$. Rogers spent more than Telus and Bell combined because it bought the largest number of paired blocks. Paired blocks are the preferred choice because they simplify deployment and improve interoperability between carriers.

iPhone 5c /5s are great for travellers

A big issue for travelers is that carriers use different communication bands. Most Canadian cell phones support the "standard" bands (850,900,1900,2100 MHz). Newer Canadian providers and some American providers use other bands such as AWS bands (1700, 2100 MHz).

What does this mean to you?

It means that you will be able to use the fastest possible connection on more networks around the world. Previously (with an iPhone 4s), my connection sometimes dropped to 2G (or edge) networks which meant painfully slow connectivity when travelling to the US. With the new iPhone 5s, you will be on 4G more often and the connection will be much more reliable.

technologyEdward Kiledjian

T-Mobile USA is getting ready to launch ts uncarrier phase 3 plan of allowing its users to use their mobile data plans in 100 countries without incurring any additional charges (that is what all the leaks and rumors say). Canada is on the list of countries.

The new feature will allow all Simple Choice customers to use unlimited 2G data and texting in any of the supported countries. Voice calls (in country) will be capped at $0.20 per minute. This is not an add on package, it will be included for free in all customer plans.

In addition to the above , T-Mobile has upgraded its network to 4G LTE ahead of schedule.
