Hackers are targeting your kindle

GeneralEdward Kiledjian

Consumers can easily become complacent when they see so much media coverage of large enterprise hacks. After all, what could a hacker gain by compromising your pc? Well it happens and it's not just your PC you should be worried about.

Hackers are capable of compromising anything that is connected to a network (think cameras, baby monitors, printers, etc). One thing you need not worry about is your reliable Amazon Kindle. It's just an e-reader, after all.

Kindle devices may have a flaw that could allow remote attackers to gain control of them, according to Checkpoint Research. It works by using a specially designed malicious ebook, which, when opened, will compromise the device.

An attacker can extract information from a compromised device including your Amazon credentials, billing information and more. Checkpoint believes that this technique could be used to target specific groups (such as the population of a country, speakers of a particular language, etc).

Amazon promptly patched the kindle after Checkpoint responsibly disclosed the vulnerability. It has been said before and I will say it again: update your devices regularly.

Ensure that your Kindle is up-to-date. Navigate to Menu > Settings > Menu > Device Info

Compare your version with the latest version of the firmware listed here.

You can force an update when your kindle is connected to WIFI by navigating to Menu > Settings > Menu > Update Your Kindle and click ok.

Kindle Unlimited finally comes to Canada

technologyEdward Kiledjian

Canadians are use to being treated like second class citizens. We often watch our american neighbours get all the cool services while we live in the stone age. Maybe it's not that bad but it is pretty bad.

Now Amazon has finally opened up it's Kindle Unlimited service to all Canadians. This means for $9.99, you can read any book from its 750,000 book digital library. What kind of books so they offer? Think of title like Harry Potter, Flash Boys, etc.

All Canadians are eligible for a free 30 days trial of the service except Quebecers. No free trial for you Quebecer! Before any french speaking Quebecois get's mad at me, Kindle Unlimited will offer 15,000 french titles.

iPad mini has the most responsive touch screen

technologyEdward Kiledjian

Agawi conducted a touch screen comparative test to determine with device's screen was the most responsive and the big winner is the Apple iPad mini at 75 milliseconds.

The next best device is the iPad (4th generation) at 81 milliseconds. The third best device is the NVIDIA shield at 92 milliseconds.

Why is responsiveness important, it is the speed at which the device reacts to your masterful commands and makes handwriting on a tablet much more usable.

Amazon launches Kindle Matchbook

technologyEdward Kiledjian

Years ago, Amazon launched their AutoRip program which gives customers free digital versions of CDs they had already bought. Now Amazon has extended this idea to book through its new Kindle Matchbook program (launching October).

If you have bought an eligible book, you will be able to download a digital Kindle version for $2.99 or less.

Skyview Travel Seatback Mount is the ultimate airplane gadget

technologyEdward Kiledjian
Last week was a long travel week where I flew :
  • Montreal to London
  • London to Belfast
  • Belfast to London
  • London  to Berlin
  • Berlin to Frankfurt
  • Frankfurt to Montreal

Some of these flights didn't offer any in-flight entertainment and the others offered horribly bad movie options. So what is a traveller to do? enjoy your own hand picked entertainment using the new Griffin Skyview Travel Seatback Mount.

This is a special mount that uses a special connector that latches to the seat back tray table or as a stand on your lowered tray tablet. The hand holds many smartphones, tablets and ereaders.

All of this wonderful enjoyment can be yours for only $29.99 (which is a small price to pay to beat the monotonous boredom of a long flight).

You can read about the product here.
